And I was just saying we’d be back on Orchard Road!
We were back there, but on the segment along Dhoby Ghaut. More specifically, we were looking to visit the Craftholic Cafe at the School of the Arts on its last day of operation! We had been intending to visit it proper since the day we ate at POMO, but never got around to it till it was just about to go away haha.
The only other Craftholic Cafe we have seen before was in Taichung, Taiwan where it was integrated into a 7-Eleven outlet. This outlet in Singapore, however, was conceived with Kki Sweets, who specialise in desserts. And since we have Craftholic plushies of our own, we brought them along with us! Say hello to Rab Jr Stripey and Rab Jr Starry!
In the Craftholic universe, there are a number of characters, namely Rab Bunny, Sloth Bear, Korat Cat, Loris Monkey, Inu-Kun Dog and more! Our Rab Jrs are tinier versions of the Rab Bunny, which we find cuter due to their oversized heads! And Rab Bunnies are so smiley, unlike Sloth Bears! Both of them are frequently put together, just like the Bear and Rabbit! ^^
As shown in the photo above, we ordered two desserts from the cafe for two reasons. Firstly, they were cheaper than the mains, and being students, we had a limited budget. Secondly, Kki Sweets specialise in desserts, so what better than to get desserts from them?
After taking all the photos we wanted to take, we finally started on the food! We tried the Strawberry Cheesecake Rab Bunny dessert first! It was made up of strawberries (of course), cheesecake chunks, granola chunks, a scoop of strawberry ice cream topped with whipped cream, a heart-shaped biscuit with Rab Bunny’s face on it and two Pocky sticks! What a mouthful! I personally dislike strawberry ice cream because it usually tastes too artificial, but this scoop tasted heavenly! I especially liked the cheesecake chunks, and it was nice eating them with the ice cream. It looks like a small portion, but that’s an illusion.
Moving on to the Pandan Souffle Cake, it had the face of Loris Monkey on it. And oh it was so soft. We both agreed that it reminded us of the pandan cakes sold in neighbourhood bakeries, but this was how they should have tasted like! In fact, I cannot really find the words to describe it. It wasn’t soft to the point of melting in the mouth – it was just very soft, very light, very delicious. We could clearly tell Kki Sweets excel in cakes!
Now, with the food out of the way, it was time to proceed with the main part – the decor! There were two corners for customers to pose with giant Craftholic plushies, as well as a mini store at the centre. We went for the giant Rab Bunny in the white corner first! Giant might have been an understatement, actually – it was larger than Clara!
It was so heavy, too. A mother and daughter were waiting for their turn so we set giant Rab down on its chair and went to the store to browse through the merchandise! Oh yes, there was a special table where customers could have two Craftholic plushies sitting opposite ‘eat’ with them!
There were Craftholic-themed stamps, files, pens, tote bags, hair ties, pouches, mugs, laptop covers… almost anything one can think of, in addition to limited edition Craftholic plushies! They were a bit on the pricey side, which was to be expected, so we did not buy any of them. But we so badly wanted to!
We went back to the now-alone giant Rab and took more photos with it! It was fun struggling to get it to piggy-back on us hahaha. We noticed there were two baby chairs at the side and got our Rab Jrs to sit in them, like babies!
Looking up, we noticed a Sloth and Rab Jr sitting so blissfully on a swing set high up on the ceiling and found them quite adorable! There was also another plushie hanging off the ceiling itself, and yet another fishing!
After that, we went back to look at the merchandise one more time, before heading for the other corner, where there was a giant Sloth in a Craftholic house! It was tougher to take good photos of this corner because of its proximity to tables, but try we did!
It was time to leave, but we lingered outside the cafe, for there was a line of plushies sitting on stools waiting to have their photos taken! The two Rab Jrs and the four doggies happily complied! So did we!
It was a great end to an afternoon spent at the Craftholic Cafe, and I was glad we caught it in time before Kki Sweets began renovation to return to its old self!
